Dear all,

I cannot be in school on friday because of the death of my grandmother.

Today (wednesday) I can also not be there because we have to prepare some stuff for the cremation.

I had a very hard time setting my mind to these frustrating vcr's (who though that would be a good idea! ;) ) so I've decided to drop that project all together. Tomorrow I'll be in class to help everyone out as much as I can. Hope we can make it into a nice presentation tomorrow.

upstairs/downstairs

Hi hee,

So, there's no more 'upstairs/downstairs'. It didn't work out with the super long cable.
Now we have UPSTAIRS/UPSTAIRS!

There will be a monitor in class and one at the stairs. We put a cookingalarm and when it goes off... We all together do an action. Like it goes off and we all together stand in a corner!

Andy says: love you

If there is any need of transport . And need a car let me know (Best by mail or let me know in class) .

I will be in at Academy/class(somewhere between 12:30 and 14:30) on Monday afternoon and Tuesday from 11:30- 15:00.



And how is the drawing? Is there something going on there.... Now (Friday) seemed that it is going to be a sort of missed opportunity .

Like to see some attempts to give it a go one way or another.

A proposal for a definit drawing? Used as print. Drawing as a logo? What to do with the material we have /ritual,destruction,presentation,wallpaper,gift etc...Can bad drawings be useful?

It's not by making a nice exhibition ,a gallery, it's also about content and see how things can function and work as a whole ....a challenge.. so the things that we talked about on Friday how is that working out in your minds. Let's see/hear some ideas on monday.

I just figured out a way to take pictures with a Cannon Slr camera while directly saving them in one file on my computer + having a delayed diashow of it that grows automatically with every new picture that is taken.

Now I only need to build a remote control for the camera that will be connected to the revolving door + a flash for the camera and the whole system works!

The question now is: should the pictures as well be printed? If yes the only affordable way is a laserprinter. If we print the pictures people have to come back to pick them up if they want to have it, otherwise they just have to come back if they want to see their picture on a screen.

Today with Sarah we managed to make the external long audiotape loop on a wall(and play with it). As the idea is to have this loop made out of the audio of people's video, we would like to have all the extracted tracks as soon as possible. If somebody can't extract the audio, just upload the video somewhere and pass the link, or bring it on monday on a usb stick. At the moment we were thinking that would be nice to have this big loop going around the television screens. The original audio of each video would be hearable with the earphones, while the whole installation is gonna be a work in itself, with 3 different videos connected by a single audio(visual) loop - connected to the speakers. Marianne's video is gonna be apart, as it is already part of an installation(but we want her audio too). Is it ok?

Something about the project with the video screen upstairs/downstairs...
We, Dovile, Andy, Sven, Sophie, Tchieu and Suzan, discussed the next:

If we put the monitor and a camera downstairs and give it a title like 'mirror', that it shows people it really is a work. So they would walk up to it for serious!
And if they walk up, we will react on it upstairs with repeating their movements and face expressions. We also thought it would be nice to put something on that the person downstairs is wearing. Like glasses, a hat, same color of the t-shirt... So it really works like a mirror.

An interactive way to also attract people to our fantastic loop room!

Upstairs - downstairs

Can everybody that works on the upstairs - downstairs project meet up tmrw all together. So we can have a brainstorm session, to get the idea more concrete and start to make decisions.

Let's just meet in class but see when everybody is there to have this brainstorm.

VHS loop update

Anita and me almost got two vhs players to play the same tape today.

My goal is to get this working tomorrow in order to make a
'vhs sampling machine'
That would be a machine that can recorder onto the same tape that is plays back.

This way, I can constantly add new material to this indefinite playing loop from one VCR and play it back on the other.

Which would be very nice to record:

The people who are entering thru the realy cool door that Sven and Andy made.
This would result in a loop that is playing whomever entered the room in the moment the tape got recorded.
There are still a lot of problems to be solved, and maybe recording something different is a better idea, but we'll see all that tomorrow.

conveyor belt

We've started working on the conveyor belt today, not fysically because the woodworkshop was closed all day but we have everything we need to start building tomorrow.

It looks like we will have 4 belts that will stand in a square, so that it becomes circular and the objects on the belt will go from one on to the other.

We were also thinking about using Daniels measuring object idea (to measure the amount of times the door opens) to put a piece of candy on the belt every time someone goes through the revolving door, so if they come in one piece of candy is dropped for them and if they want more they have to go through the door again!

Maybe also putting the loop-tapes on the belt so that people can take them from there to put them in the player.

We bought some paint rollers, enough to get started but if people still have rollers around BRING THEM as Marjanne said, we will give them back to you unharmed!

Also Anita can give us some air chambers (binnenbanden) but if you have some around we could also use them!!

This is what I'm reserving in 15 minutes

fischerspooner - Get Confused

I was wondering wether there was a possibility to get the visitors of our looproom into a loop themselves so that they return to the looproom repeatedly during the open day.

My first idea was to connect a camera to the revolving door that takes a picture of everyone who enters. That picture will be shown on a screen (maybe printed?) one hour later. If someone wants to see his/her picture one has to return to the looproom where the whole process starts again as soon as they enter.

What do all of you think? Suggestions?

VHS loop

The vhs loop seemed to work.

Tomorrow afternood: Wednesday, I want to try and make it a little more compilicated, as I want to copple to VHS recorder together and try to make a sort of looping/sampling machine by letting the one player record and the other player playback the loops.

Other things that could be added to this instalation would be:

- more recorders and more playback machines

- A video camera for live recording

- some kind of interference with magnets

looproom drawingbox

In our storrage closet I put box with loop-drawings/scetches etc. You can put drawings in it of ideas scetches for the projects you are working on etc. You can reproduce drawings that are in there already or use it as a visual-repondense. And so on.Would be nice to have a big growing collection and the possiblillity to use them in final presentaion next week for example as wall-paper or just use it in a project you are working on at the moment. It's group material.

for (renewed) conveyor belt purposes...

we need big paint rollers like these, including handles. if you have any lying around, please bring them to school. you will get them back unharmed..

Mirrors offer a simple way to 'loop' a space. I. e. in bathrooms where two mirrors hang on opposite sides on the walls one has sometimes the effect of an endless chain of rooms when one looks into a mirror.

VHS video loop experiment from Gilles, Sarah & Anita, companion idea to the cassette tapes.

(p.s. all of you, please post new developments as they happen each day so that the rest of us can have some overview of the whole process)

Summary Monday morning loop & repetition ideas

1. tape cassette loops (initiated by Anita & Gilles) Everybody get old cassette tapes & make analog cassette loops (can find instructions on internet or ask Anita & Gilles). Starting point - what your mother always repeats to you. Can also turn into other things, like compliments instead of complaints. Make blank ones, too so visitors can also record.

2. Anita, Gilles & Sarah - make a big one by stretching out the contents of a cassette tape meters away from each other

3. Conveyer belt/Lopende band idea - Cecile, Marjanne, Dana & Rachel
Try out all kinds of conveyer belt ideas, horizontal, vertical, things falling, like an airport baggage belt etc. Maybe use bicycle parts. Maybe interactive. Maybe more than one. Also discussion of some sushi restaurants with the sushi going around in boats in a circle around the sushi chef.

4. Revolving door at our entrance like at a department store - Sven, Andy, Seulki - can be tried out first with cardboard

5. Upstairs and downstairs video surveillance. Person downstairs has to follow movements of person upstairs via the monitor. Hopefully visitors downstairs will be curious about what's going on to go upstairs to our exhibition. Sven, Dovile, Sophie, Thieu, Vibe.
